The number of those benefiting from chiropractic care continues to rise as more and more people discover the importance of good spinal health. If you’re a patient of chiropractic, you probably know a lot about what the therapy can do for you—but what
about the profession itself? Here are some chiropractic fun facts you definitely didn’t see coming.

The term “chiropractic” is a combination of two Grecian words: cheir which means hand, and praktos which means done. “Done by Hand”… fitting, right?

The first chiropractic adjustment was given in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer (the father of Chiropractic!) who helped a janitor, Harvey Lillard, regain his hearing after a back accident he suffered 17 years prior.

Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) go through a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, lab and clinical internships during their 4-year doctoral graduate school program. Perspective: If you combine all that time, that’s 175 days straight. Oof.

It is estimated that Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) treat over 35 million Americans (adults and children) annually.

There are about 95,000 doctors of chiropractic in active practice across the globe, and about 10,000 students are currently enrolled in chiropractic education programs in the United States alone.

32 National Football League teams utilize chiropractic! All 32 teams have their own chiropractor to boost performance, maintain wellness and treat musculoskeletal strain and injury.

Unbeknownst to quite a few, infants can benefit greatly from chiropractic care. It makes sense—birth can be pretty hard on a little body! The adjustment is adapted to suit their needs and is perfectly safe.

Each day, over one million adjustments take place across the globe. That’s a whole lot of relief!

Chiropractic is recognized and regulated by law in over 40 countries! And in the United States, D.Cs are licensed in all 50 of them!

An injured worker is 28 times less likely to have spinal surgery if the first point of contact is a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC), rather than a surgeon.

Treatment for low back pain (a common symptom treated by chiropractic care) initiated by a DC costs up to 20 percent less than when started by a MD.

Chiropractors and Quitting Smoking: How Chiropractors Can Help Patients Quit

Chiropractors might not be the first group you think of when it comes to getting help quitting smoking, but they have a big opportunity to help their patients make a positive change in their lives, and many are seizing it.

Chiropractors offer effective treatment for back pain, and although their specialty is making such adjustments, there is a lot of potential for them to help smokers quit too. The connection between chiropractors and quitting smoking isn’t something
most people would expect, but there are many ways chiropractors can use their skills to do something positive for their patients who smoke. Although you might not be able to adjust your way to being nicotine-free, the link between smoking and
back pain, the stress-inducing effect of constant pain and the time patients spend in chiropractors’ offices all offer them opportunities to encourage you to kick the habit.

Smoking and Lower Back Pain: An Unexpected Link

Smoking and lower back pain are more closely connected than you may think. A meta-analysis published in 2010 looked
at 40 different studies addressing the association between smoking and back pain, and found that both current and former smokers were more likely to have problems with their back than never-smokers. The authors point out that the association wasn’t
big, but they did find a statistically significant link.

The assumption is that smoking contributes to lower back pain, and this provides a good reason for chiropractors to encourage their patients to quit smoking, beyond the well-established health benefits of quitting. The association doesn’t mean that
quitting smoking will resolve your back issues, but it does suggest that smoking may be worsening or in some way contributing to the issue.

Stress, Smoking and Lower Back Pain: How Chiropractors Can Help You Quit Smoking

The previous section showed that quitting smoking may help the work chiropractors do be more effective, but chiropractors could also have a beneficial impact on your smoking habits too.

The reason for this comes down to a knock-on effect resulting from back pain and poor posture. Being in constant pain is understandably stressful, and this stress can either lead you to start smoking for temporary relief, or it could make you smoke
more than you already do. Chiropractic adjustment has been shown to help with lower back pain,
and is the reason most patients visit a chiropractor.

When your back pain has been dealt with, your posture is likely to improve, and the absence of pain in your day-to-day life will reduce your stress and improve your mood. Although the effect of chiropractic adjustment on quitting smoking isn’t direct,
this reduction in stress can make it easier to get through the day without smoking, and when combined with evidence-based approaches to quitting smoking, it could make quitting and staying away from cigarettes much easier.

Chiropractors and Quitting Smoking: Brief Interventions for Patients

The improvements to back pain coming from chiropractic treatment could have a knock-on effect that makes it easier to quit smoking, but chiropractors can also have a more direct effect on your smoking.

Chiropractors see patients regularly, and a big part of chiropractic care – as with most medical care – involves developing positive relationships with patients. This gives chiropractors a great opportunity to ask about smoking and even offer brief
interventions to encourage and help patients quit. The feasibility of such a practice has been studied,
and showed generally positive results.

The approach used in the study and recommended by chiropractic organizations is to ask patients
about their smoking histories and to provide information about quitting smoking. All an individual chiropractor would have to do is ask some basic smoking history questions (to determine whether the individual smokes or is exposed to second-hand
smoke), follow-up with returning patients about their smoking status, and refer anybody in need of help to a specialist, or suggest good locations for educational material.

Chiropractors can also help patients quit smoking more indirectly by ensuring their office remains smoke-free, and by displaying prominent “no smoking” signs along with brochures looking at the risks of tobacco. The aim isn’t to push patients into
making a decision to quit, but to provide subtle reminders of the health risks of smoking and emphasize that as a medical professional, you are concerned about his or her health because of it.

Quitting Smoking and Staying Smoke-Free: Chiropractors Can Help

The key message for chiropractors is to seize the opportunity you have to both educate patients about the risks of smoking and to promote living smoke-free as the healthier choice. For the patient, the help chiropractors can offer for your back pain
could reduce stress and thereby diminish your desire to smoke, but with regular contact, your chiropractor may star to encourage you to quit and point you in the right direction to get further support.

How Chiropractic May Help Treat Sciatica

Sciatica is a common problem for many people that is identified by pain that starts in the lower back or buttocks, and then travels down to one or both legs. It will vary in terms of frequency, severity, or it may be constant.

The pain from sciatica can be severe, and it can also be very sharp. It may be associated with numbness, burning, or tingling sensations. What people may not realize is that it is a symptom – an indication that something is wrong. The problem that causes
sciatic pain is often a misaligned vertebra in the spine. The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and extends into the lower leg. This is why the pain can often be felt anywhere along this nerve.

A chiropractor often treats people with sciatica. Their adjustments will aim to realign the spine, taking the pressure off of the nerve and often bringing quick relief. Once the pressure is off, the body can begin to heal itself. While adjustments are
probably most often used, other treatments may be given, particularly if an adjustment may not be advisable. Treatments may include the use of ultrasound, a TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) device, or ice therapy. Ultrasound warms
the area and increases circulation, which can reduce the swelling and muscle tension. A TENS device brings relief by using a slight electric current to relax muscle spasms and to increase endorphins. Massage therapy may also help.

In some people, sciatica may correct itself, possibly occurring only once or a couple of times. A chiropractor can help bring relief, but several treatments, or adjustments, will likely be needed, particularly if it has been occurring for some time. Letting
a chiropractor treat sciatic pain gives you a no surgery and no drugs option. Exercises will most likely be recommended to strengthen the muscles in the back to help prevent sciatica from recurring, but healing is apt to take some time.

Have you ever awakened and can’t turn your neck? Or maybe feel a twinge during a workout and find yourself unable to look side to side. Or realize one day it’s a real struggle to look over your shoulder trying to check your blind spot while driving in
the car? If you’ve ever experienced a significant neck stiffness, pain, or loss of range of motion, you know just how much it affects your daily life — and you know it affects you more than you ever imagined. But what’s happening — and how do you
fix it?

Structure

Proper anatomy and structure of the spine includes a lordotic curve in the cervical spine (neck). If you look at the neck from a side view of an X-ray with the person’s chin facing to the right, there should be a nice backward C-shaped curve to the spine.

The lordotic curve of the cervical spine is important and there for a reason. The curves help absorb the shock and facilitate proper motion and function of the spine. The better the spine moves, the healthier it is. The healthier your spine is, the healthier
your nervous system is. The healthier your nervous system is, the greater overall health you experience in your daily life.

Daily Posture and Support

Proper posture during your day and proper support in the night during sleep are imperative to the health and structure of the lordotic curve of the neck. By participating in the common mistakes below, you contribute to the chances of waking up and not
being able to move the neck from side to side and the unbearable “oh my gosh, what have I done!?!?” experience.

During the day: Some of the most common postural patterns that disturb the proper health of the neck curve is rounded shoulders and forward head carriage. Think sitting at a desk, shoulders slightly or significantly
rounded forward and down — a bit of forward slouching if you will — and your chin either tipped slightly down or jutted out, often while you look down at a cell phone or computer screen.

At night: The first crime of improper neck support is sleeping on your stomach. When you sleep on your stomach, the curve is not supported; it’s also contorted because of needing to turn the neck to one side or
the other. If one is a back or side sleeper, often the pillow used is too flat or too firm with little contour to meet the demands of a healthy curve.

Tips: Do posture checks during your day once an hour in order to train yourself to better support the health of your spine and your neck curve. Pretend you have a string pulling you up from the very top of your
head; your shoulders will naturally fall down and back. This is the ideal, and this small trick will help immensely.

At night, do not sleep on your stomach. Also, invest in a contoured pillow that is specifically designed to support the curve of the cervical spine and use it every night.

Get Adjusted

Regular chiropractic adjustments support the health and function of the spine. This includes the cervical curvature. I recommend using chiropractic regularly as a supportive measure — a basic component to your healthcare routine. It’s easier to support
a properly running machine regularly than it is to fix one that’s already broken down. With that being said, chiropractic adjustments help repair the kinks and malfunctions that occur along the way. If you find yourself in one of those spots, see
a chiropractor as soon as possible. The adjustments can restore motion to the spinal joints, help decrease any inflammation or spasms, and increase the range of motion. As a side effect of all the restoration of health, guess what will decrease? The
pain.

Time flies. Somehow, in the blink of an eye, it’s springtime again. This means that there’s a whole new slew of sports and activities for many of you. Maybe you’ve taken the winter off from significant physical activity or maybe you’re simply switching
gears from one activity to the next; either way, you want your mind and body to be prepared and functioning optimally to withstand the springtime fun.

Get Adjusted

Hopefully regular chiropractic adjustments are a part of your health and wellness routine because you’re simply and profoundly trying to increase the quality of your life. If you don’t participate in regular chiropractic adjustments or if it’s been awhile
since you’ve seen your chiropractor, you should definitely get in and get cared for. The chiropractic adjustment, beyond improving nervous (communication) system functioning, restores joint range of motion. Improved nervous system function and optimal
joint range of motion are going to give your muscles and tendons the best possible advantage for tip-top functioning whether it’s running up and down a field, stopping abruptly and pivoting, or withstanding potential injuries or traumas.

Prep Period

Give yourself some time. Instead of knowing that the shift in physical activity is coming and doing nothing until that first practice, get up, get out, and get moving. Make sure that you’re physically active in some way on a consistent basis four weeks
prior to the first meeting. Tailor the frequency of any physical activity based on intensity of the practice and game schedule to come. If you’re headed into a once weekly practice and once weekly game, you can lighten the schedule of the intensity
of prep period compared to three practices and/or two or three games per week. Keep the prep period and the practice/game schedule balanced.

Warm Up and Ease Out

No matter how many springs sports seasons you’ve been through, folks remain true to patterns. Patients consistently come in and say they’ve overdone it but then jumped right back into the swing of things at full tilt. We live in a society of immediate
results and people don’t want to wait for, or ease, into anything. That doesn’t serve you or your body when you bring this way of being into switching sports seasons or activities.

Warm up 15-20 minutes prior to each practice and game. Think of the actual movements of the activity you’re participating in and move the body as a warm-up accordingly. So if it’s soccer, you’re going to pay more attention to a lower body warm-up or activity
than you are with softball. It doesn’t mean you ignore the upper body, but the warm-ups would simply be concentrated more heavily on the lower body. Whereas with softball, you may spend a few more minutes concentrating on upper body motions, arm circles,
and simulated throwing. Basics such as jumping jacks, walking at brisk pace, light jogging, and air squats are helpful in any pre-activity warm-up.

Cool Down and Stretch

You’re not done as soon as the practice or game is done. Remember that. Your body has been ramped up for a period of time and you’ve been asking it to perform at a higher level than normal. Don’t simply stop abruptly. Spend five to eight minutes cooling
down. You can even simply repeat your warm-up exercises. Spend a minimum of 10 minutes stretching the major muscle groups, quadriceps, hamstrings, pectoral muscles (chest) and trapezius muscles (upper middle back): think legs, chest, and upper back.
If you don’t feel like you have the time or energy right after the game for the stretching, do it that evening.

Bottom line is this: don’t jump into a new sport or activity as quickly and unprepared as so many folks do in this world in many parts of life. Your body needs time to acclimate in and exit out, gracefully. Check in with your chiropractor to see how they
can guide you along this process. The nervous system, optimal health, and functioning is our main focus, and that will help you be the best athlete you can be. Let us help you help yourself. And if it makes you a better player, so be it.

Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that Tom Brady’s got it going on.

Over the course of his career, he’s racked up a pretty impressive resume with five Super Bowl wins, four Super Bowl MVP awards, 13 Pro Bowl appearances, two League MVP titles, three recognitions as League Passing Yards leader, four crowns as League
Touchdowns leader, a Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year naming, a national championship during his stint with the team up north, proud member of the Illuminati and the list goes on and on.

Oh wait! And could we forget? He’s even graced the cover of GQ magazine as their Man of the Year. C’mon, Tom! What will you do next?!

Although Brady has an impressive resume, his legacy has also had its fair share of allegations, controversy and conspiracy. From Spygate to Deflategate and, now, Thumbgate, Tom and Papa Bill sure do have a way of becoming headlines and making people
question their success. Let’s face it, the world has never seen a 40-year-old professional football quarterback have this kind of longevity and consistent success before. The question begs to be asked: How does he do it?

It’s easy to jump to the allure of financial and entertainment-driven conspiracies, because these kinds of theories have plagued professional sports for years. But what if we are approaching this from the wrong angle altogether? What if we’re overlooking
the real secret to Brady’s healthy, successful and injury-free career?

One Step Ahead of the Game

In his own words, Brady said, “Chiropractic just makes you feel so much better. When I walk out of the clinic, I feel like I’m about three inches taller and everything’s in place. As long as I see the chiropractor, I feel like I’m one step ahead of
the game.”

And being one step ahead of the game, is clearly something he’s always done quite well. Critics may already be drumming up another conspiracy theory, but let’s unpack this little bit further.

Chiropractic Care and Athletes

Experts estimate that 90 percent of all world-class athletes use chiropractic care to prevent injuries and improve their performance. In fact, all thirty-two NFL teams have a chiropractor on their training staff – but why?

Chiropractors deliver a gentle, non-invasive, non-addictive therapy, known as a chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractic adjustments reduce joint restrictions or misalignments in the spine and other joints in the body in an effort to reduce inflammation
and improve function of both the affected joint and nervous system. By increasing joint mobility and improving your nervous system function, your body has the ability to better manage and heal itself.

Outside of the more commonly-known benefits of chiropractic care like back pain,
neck pain and migraine relief,
for athletes, routine chiropractic care provides a drug-free ability to naturally:

Increase range of motion and flexibility

Decrease muscle and joint pain or soreness

Enhance nerve and immune function

Reduce recovery time

Improve posture – You’re welcome GQ

All of which improve overall health, well-being and, ultimately, performance. While chiropractic probably won’t make you the next Tom Brady it will, however, help to keep you one step ahead of the game for your own health and wellness.

Traditionally, the focus of health care is centered around a person’s symptoms and the treatment or relief of their symptoms. This is the entire basis for relief care. Today Chiropractic care is very well known for its ability to provide relief care and
is often referred to as miraculous in its ability to provide relief where all other forms of health care have failed. However, although many chiropractors specialize in and are extremely successful with providing relief care, this was never the intended
purpose for Chiropractic. Chiropractic from its inception over 110 years ago was designed to be a principled form of health care. The goal or objective of Chiropractic is to identify the underlying cause of a person health challenge and to correct
it. A condition of the spine known as Vertebral Subluxation interferes with the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Principled and Wellness Chiropractors locate Vertebral Subluxations, thoroughly analyze all of its components, design a specific
program of adjustments and exercises to correct Vertebral Subluxations, and most importantly to help you and your family learn how to achieve a state of optimal health and how to maintain a healthy spine into the future.

To fully appreciate and understand this difference and the importance of Principled care let’s start by looking at the difference between “symptoms” and “warning signs”. The difference is best understood through a simple comparison. If a person sprains
their ankle and they experience pain in their ankle – this is a direct relationship. The location of pain and the location of the injury are the same. This is a classic example of a symptom. However, if a person is suffering from heart disease and
is experiencing pain into their left arm – there is likely nothing wrong with the left arm! This is a classic warning sign of a problem with the heart.

It would seem quite silly – even foolish – to spend a tremendous amount of energy and resources treating a person’s arm pain when the cause of this pain is coming from the heart.

Very similarly with the spine – if vertebral subluxation is affecting the spine and causes pressure on the nerve going to your leg, over time you may begin to experience leg pain (commonly called sciatica). However, we could examine and treat the leg
and we would be doing so in vain as this was a warning sign telling us of the problem in the spine. Depending on which nerve(s) in the spine is being affected will depend on what type of warning sign we may experience. (Be sure to see the Vertebral
Subluxation Nerve Chart). Fortunately or unfortunately there is often a significant time delay between the onset of subluxation and the first warning signs. This is because of our bodies amazing ability to adapt to both it’s internal and external
environment. For example, if you have a pebble in your shoe – you don’t lean on it – you lean off of it and your body behaves very similarly in relation to Vertebral Subluxation.

Very commonly one of the first Vertebral Subluxations to occur in the spine is in the neck. This is for a variety of reasons including the fact that the vertebra, ligaments, and muscles in the neck are the smallest and the head (in particular in children)
is disproportionately heavy in comparison to our body. Small slips and falls as a child or even the birth process itself can result in the small vertebra of the neck becoming displaced or subluxated. The body behaving very intelligently will change
our posture, often shifting the head well in front of the shoulders and leaning the head to one side or the other to reduce the pressure this subluxation places on the spinal cord. As a result of the change in head posture our rib cage may bend or
shift to reduce pressure on the spinal nerves and similarly the big muscles of the lumbar spine and pelvis will compensate to further reduce the unwanted pressure on the spinal nerves. This for the body is a much better state than suffering the immediate
and devastating effects of spinal cord and spinal nerve pressure. However, this leaves the pressure on the vertebral discs imbalanced and causes them to begin wearing out at a progressive rate.

It is most often not until the discs of the spine begin to significantly wear and the body begins losing it’s ability to naturally compensate to the Vertebral Subluxations that we start seeing the intermittent warning signs related to subluxation. (Be
sure to see the Subluxation Degeneration page). Quite often the first place in the spine to begin to fail and lose its ability to compensate is the lumbar spine. This is because all of the forces of gravity within the body affect the lumbar spine
and we often use our lumbar spine to lift amounts that are no problem for a healthy spine but with Vertebral Subluxation Degeneration the spine continues to become weaker over time. Things which we used to do with ease we may start avoiding because
when we do them now it causes pain. However, this avoidance is often the result of continued degeneration as we ignore the warning signs which our body is giving us. Very similarly in this situation if we begin treating this person’s lower back pain
without thoroughly analyzing their Vertebral Subluxations and the cause was actually coming from a Vertebral Subluxation in their neck – we may be able to temporarily relieve their lower back pain but it will only be a matter of time before it returns
because the back pain was simply a warning sign.

If you are having dizziness, your chiropractor can help.

When someone experiences dizziness, also called vertigo, the whole world seems to spin out of control with the nearest solid object becoming a lifesaver.

Vertigo is a common complaint, especially after head and neck trauma. It may come from problems in the inner ear, or from disturbances in pathways in the nervous system. The experience can be impact your whole world, causing nausea, vomiting, and
sweating.

If you are having trouble with vertigo, your chiropractor may be able to help. In a recent report in Livestrong, chiropractic solutions are outlined.

Chiropractic manipulation can help solve vertigo: “Your chiropractor will use manipulation targeting joints that are not moving properly. In the upper neck, faulty motion patterns create misinformation about
body position and movement going from the joints to the brain. This type of vertigo, called cervicogenic vertigo, can be helped by chiropractic manipulation.”

Positioning Maneuvers: The inner ear houses the body’s true balance center, the vestibulocochlear system. This complex system of fluid-filled tubes lined with hair-like sensors provides information to the
central nervous system about position and movement. In some individuals, debris may accumulate in there. If this debris settles on sensitive areas within the tubes, it may result in vertigo.

If the patient’s vertigo appears to be coming from the inner ear, a chiropractor may use the Epley Maneuver to reposition the debris to a more innocuous position.

Your chiropractor will have exercises to help too. Exercises like the Brandt-Daroff technique have the person sit on the edge of a bed and flop first to one side, back upright, then to the other side
at one-minute intervals. Tai chi exercise may also help as slow, controlled movements provide a safe way to focus on your body movements and balance.

Your chiropractor will discuss your diet and daily habits to pinpoint other reasons for vertigo. Tobacco, alcohol, caffeine, and other substances that stimulate or depress the nervous system may become triggers.
And non-prescription sleeping pills or antihistamines can spark dizziness. Your chiropractor may also suggest meditation, relaxation, or breathing techniques to regain control.

As you pursue diet, new daily habits, and relaxation techniques, be sure to discuss changes with your doctor to complete your health picture.
