How Chiropractic May Help Treat Sciatica

Sciatica is a common problem for many people that is identified by pain that starts in the lower back or buttocks, and then travels down to one or both legs. It will vary in terms of frequency, severity, or it may be constant.

The pain from sciatica can be severe, and it can also be very sharp. It may be associated with numbness, burning, or tingling sensations. What people may not realize is that it is a symptom – an indication that something is wrong. The problem that causes
sciatic pain is often a misaligned vertebra in the spine. The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and extends into the lower leg. This is why the pain can often be felt anywhere along this nerve.

A chiropractor often treats people with sciatica. Their adjustments will aim to realign the spine, taking the pressure off of the nerve and often bringing quick relief. Once the pressure is off, the body can begin to heal itself. While adjustments are
probably most often used, other treatments may be given, particularly if an adjustment may not be advisable. Treatments may include the use of ultrasound, a TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) device, or ice therapy. Ultrasound warms
the area and increases circulation, which can reduce the swelling and muscle tension. A TENS device brings relief by using a slight electric current to relax muscle spasms and to increase endorphins. Massage therapy may also help.

In some people, sciatica may correct itself, possibly occurring only once or a couple of times. A chiropractor can help bring relief, but several treatments, or adjustments, will likely be needed, particularly if it has been occurring for some time. Letting
a chiropractor treat sciatic pain gives you a no surgery and no drugs option. Exercises will most likely be recommended to strengthen the muscles in the back to help prevent sciatica from recurring, but healing is apt to take some time.
